After you have learned to knit, purl, work in the round, switch needle sizes, and make decreases you can knit these extra thick hats. You will start by working from the bottom up, and making a knit, purl brim. Adding a smooth stockinette top to the knit-purl-rib brim creates a classic knit look. To make the hats extra-warm, you will hold two strands of yarn together as if they were one strand as you knit. Choose double point needles, short circulars, or long circulars, and follow the instructions to knit in the round in your favorite method. Between the ribbed and smooth sections of this pattern, you will practice switching needle sizes and yarn colors. With this pattern download, you will receive instructions for Preemie, Baby, Toddler, Child, Adult, and Adult XL sizes. How these Chunky Beanie Hats are Made This pattern can be knit in the round in three different ways. Instructions are included for double point needles, the magic loop, and shorter circular needles. Pick your favorite method to knit in the round, then follow the instructions that match your chosen needles. Materials Make these hats with two strands of worsted weight yarn held together as one. I designed the hat using Caron Simply Soft yarn in solid colors. Try their variegated “Paints” yarn line to spice things up. Or, you can substitute almost any worsted weight yarn in this pattern successfully; just check your gauge before you start. Skills This is a beginner to intermediate knitting skill level pattern that requires a general understanding of knitting in the round, knit stitches, purl stitches, switching needle sizes, and decreases. Size Notes Adult Extra Large size fits adults with larger heads, or measuring 23 to 25 inches around. Adult size fits most adults and teens, or heads measuring 21 to 24 inches around. Child size fits children ages 2 – 14 years, or heads measuring 19 to 21 inches around. Toddler size fits children ages 3 months – 2 years, or heads measuring 16 to 19 inches around. Baby size fits infants from birth to 3 months, or heads measuring 13 to 16 inches around. Preemie size fits extra small babies, or heads measuring 10.5 to 13 inches around. To keep your hats looking their best, hand wash or machine wash separately on delicate cycle in cold water. Laying flat to dry is recommended.
